Psychological resilience and mental fortitude.

Everyone who has been negatively effected by the Covid crisis, which is pretty much everyone in the country, of course some more than others, has been given an opportunity to develop these invaluable psychological traits.
As Aberdeen faces its second lockdown, I know that many businesses are going to be really struggling just now and in such a difficult position. This is a massive challenge that we as business owners face, but this can be used as an opportunity to strengthen our mind against the difficulties life throws at us. I thought I would share one of my favourite quotes from one of my favourite philosophers, Seneca.
‘I Jude you unfortunate because you have never lived through misfortune. You have passed through life without an opponent – no one can know what you are capable of, not even you’
As a gym owner I have spent a lot of time over the years worrying and stressing about things that have never happened. It’s part of running a business that I am sure all business owners understand. The past 5 months have undoubtedly been the biggest challenge CN Fitness has faced since we opened 7 years ago. However the reality of it is, that although it is difficult and the challenges have been significant. Here we are, after being closed for 5 months, putting one foot in front of the other and getting it done and we will continue to do so for as long as is needed. When the shit hits the fan, it’s amazing how resilient and adaptive we can be. If you had said to me at the start of this year that there would be a global pandemic that forces your business to close for six months with untold uncertainty about what the future holds, I just could not have seen it as possible and would honestly have struggled to cope with the thought of it.
However the past five months have really taught me valuable lessons and enabled me to put into practise the principles of mental fortitude. When faced with difficult situations, you have two options. Crumble and give in, or roll up your sleeves and do everything you can to control the things you can control and not let the things you cant control negatively effect your mindset.
